So you can Easily guess what I will write now. Of course, After seeing SMS, I am interested to know about the current status of Bangladesh in peacekeeping that I wanna share. So let’s come to the point.
UN peacekeeping is an unique global partnership. The aim of Peacekeeping by United Nation is to assist host countries navigate the difficult path for lasting peace against conflict.
During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, the first UN peacekeeping mission was deployed to the middle East. But officially the mission was established on May 29, 1948.
In 1988, through the deploymen to help monitor the armistice between Iran and Iraq, Bangladesh was first started to serve as Peacekeeper in UN peacekeeping mission. The rate of contribution for peacekeeping, Bangladesh has become the largest contributor of UN peacekeeping mission. the past year report shows that there were 7,246 Bangladeshi troops and police personnel in 10 missions around the world. In Haiti, from 2015 until October 2017, all-female Bangladeshi Formed Police Unit served as peacekeeper with the UN mission which is known as MINUSTAH.
In 2017, TThe two female combat pilots, Flight Lieutenant Nayma Haque and Flight Lieutenant Tamanna-E-Lutf who are sent to the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Bangladeshi engineers are also served in UN mission in south Sudan as a leading efforts to improve a 78-kilometre stretch of road between Gumbo and Mangalla, on the artery between Juba and Bor. There are many recordss for Bangladeshi Peacekeepers with UN mission.
There are three principle are followed for peacekeeping such as
— Consent of the parties;
–Impartiality;
–Non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate.
There are some the world’s hotspots like the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the Darfur region of Sudan where Bangladeshi peacekeepers work.
One more thing Peacekeepers are not allow to use enforcement tool. They may use force at tactical level with the permission of security council. They can carry light weapons for self defence.
In our 30 years glorious history, we lost 130 lives, of which 84 belong to the Bangladesh Army, one to the Bangladesh Navy and three to the Bangladesh Air Force.
